Random Acts of Kindness

Hello Lovelies!

I hope you enjoyed your four day weekend!
Yesterday was Columbus day and while most of us were home binging on Netflix and catching up on sleep, some of our students were volunteering with buildOn at Madison square park. You all know that it can be very refreshing to see bright and smiley faces in the usually grim and bustling City. The students spoke about Breast Cancer Awareness, high-fived passerby's and handed out free breast cancer awareness buttons among other things.
Our own Safiatou Sangare had the pleasure of giving free hugs to some awesome strangers and sharing encouraging messages on facebook throughout the day. Well done Safi!

How can you resist such a radiant smile!

A few reminders for you all:
The SEAD dinner is on October 19th at 5:45pm!

We have a college visit to Marist College on Saturday October 17th.

As we get closer to the end of the marking period, please make sure that you're staying on track!

If you haven't submitted your college essay to me, please send it to me ASAP!

Until next time,
SeadLove

Sunday Study Session ft. Chocolate Cheesecake and Hot Cholcolate

Hello Lovelies!

It's already the second day of my third week at BCSM and it's been fabulous. The students have settled into the flow and I'm also finding my way around.
I held a study session on Sunday at Barnes & Noble and the students who visited had a great time doing their assignments for various classes.
This is not a real picture from the event
This past week, I spent time with various students thinking about how to get the best out of their leisurely hours. It's good to keep in mind that the time you spend outside of class is every bit as important as the time you spend in school. So maximize your time! Get involved after school, whether it's joining an SAT prep class, joining a sports club or volunteering with buildOn; colleges will be pleased to admit a well rounded student who likes to get involved. It's also wonderful to know that you're making a direct impact in your community, you're doing something that you thoroughly enjoy and that you're challenging yourself to grow as a person!

Michelle at the college office
Michelle Garcia has been challenging herself outside of school by enrolling in College Now with Lehman College. College Now offers college level course to high achieving students and gives students a maximum of three credits for college.

Reminders:

The SEAD dinner is going to be on October 19th at 5pm. Make sure your parents know about this!

Precious

Week 2

 Hello wonderful people!

This is my first full week since the start of my internship; we had two major holidays last week—Eid and Yom Kippur!
I’m increasingly falling in love with the school and the community everyday, and I'm very grateful to be here. I mentioned this last week but I have to say again...I adore the eagerness with which the students participate and engage with each other in class; it’s been such a pleasure to be a part of that experience. Some of the students are visiting their prospective colleges and are finally getting to see the undergraduate experience in its most tangible reality! Ariella visited Smith College this past weekend and Safi just returned from participating in the DIVOH program at Amherst. It’s always so delightful to hear about their experiences!

Just a reminder;
There’s a parent’s teacher conference tomorrow from 5-8pm in the Auditorium. Please let your parents know about this.
I’m excited to meet them!

A movie/dinner outing is in the works so stay tuned!

Here's our very own Mr. Rivera doing some math for the SAT in the college office. It's such a joy to see the students being so studious :)

Until next time,
SeadLove

Hello everyone!

So for the past two days, Ive been having 1:1 meetings with the SEAD students and it's been fantastic! The whole BCSM family has been very welcoming and has made navigating the school very easy. Mr. Kurz and Ms Henriquez, my wonderful site contacts have been providing a lot of assistance in getting me to warm up to the school at large and I'm really excited to work with them this term!
I've had the pleasure of sitting in on some of the students' classes and it's such a joy to see how they participate with so much liveliness, unafraid to share their thoughts. I have to say that these students are some of the most sophisticated and insightful high school students I've ever met!
I'm looking forward to spending some more time with all of you.
There're a lot of fun activities planned for the rest of the term so stay tuned!

SeadLove,

Precious

Hello wonderful people!

I'm Precious Yeboah, and I'll be interning at the Bronx Center for Science and Math(BCSM) for the Fall of 2015! It's such a pleasure to be a part of the SEAD family!

I was born in Ghana where I spent the first 14 years of my life and moved to the Bronx,NY in 2008.
I'm currently a Junior at Dartmouth College where I'm double majoring in Studio Art and Economics. On campus, I'm largely involved with the Christian and African communities. I’m  involved with Bethel Campus Fellowship and Christian Union. My faith is an integral part of my identity and through these communities, I’ve forged some of my strongest relationships as a student.I’m a member of the Dartmouth African Students Association and I also serve as a social media chairperson for the Jabulani African chorus where our aim is to spread a passion and awareness for African music and culture.  I enjoy painting, singing, watching Korean dramas and listening to Edith Piaf.

I know that senior year can be really difficult because of how overwhelming the College application process can be, but fret not I'm here to offer all the help I can give to make sure that your senior year is more manageable!

I'm very excited to work with you all, and I'll be available at the college office with Ms.Henriquez and Mr.Kurtz starting on September 21st so please come and say "hello".

One more day for Spring SEAD Intern

Hello SEAD students, families, and guardians!

My time in NYC is just about complete. Tomorrow will be my last day at BCSM, and what a time I have had! I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the students, their teachers, and the college counselors. I'm really going to miss you all!

Just some updates on the week:

I'm really proud for Ariela and Michelle for taking the initiative to improve on math. I know the results are bound to come!

All the students came back today saying that the English Common Core regents went well. I'm happy to hear that all the preparation in Ms. Adelson's class paid off. WELL DONE SEAD SCHOLARS!

REMINDERS:

1. Turn in the SEAD Health Form to me TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 3rd!!!!!!!!!

2. Safi will be performing tomorrow at BCSM's Spring Concert. Come and support her at 6pm.

3. For those of you taking the SAT II, get a good nights rest, eat a great breakfast, and get to your testing location on time on Saturday, June 6th. You all have been working so hard outside of class, so finish strong!

4. STAY ON TRACK FOR CLASSES!! There is not much time left before the end of the marking period, so do not quit now. Every little thing matters. Talk to teachers as needed and keep getting those grades up!

5. SEAD III dates once again are July 5th-25th!

I'm very happy I have gotten to know you all, and I look forward to seeing you this summer at SEAD III.

Best,

Simone Schmid
